Lowestoft joint boss Ady Gallagher confirmed after last night's impressive display against League One Colchester United the Ryman Premier Division new boys are hoping to pull of a coup by signing ex-Norwich City youngster Andrew Cave-Brown.

The former Scotland youth international has been training with the Trawler Boys since his release from Orient and played the opening 45 minutes against United at Crown Meadow.

“He has trained with us a couple of times,” said Gallagher. “We've had a look at him tonight. He's a local lad. We know all about his pedigree from Norwich and we're hopeful we might be able to work something out.

“It shows how far the club has come because this boy was playing League One last year, so if he were to come and play for us it would be a testament to how far we have moved on.

“You can see tonight we played a League One side and in terms of quality I don't think any of our boys were out of their depth.

“The five-time-a-week training and full-time fitness makes a bit of difference in terms of sharpness but Andy will be a great addition and fit in really well.”

Gallagher insists the Blues can hold their own one rung higher up the non-league pyramid after running away with the Ryman Division One North title.

“We're going into the unknown so you don't use these pre-season games as a form guide,” he said. “We are plugging in some new players but there is a long way to go yet and our focus is really on the first game of the season - that is when it really counts.

“We never make predictions. We just concentrate on what we have to do week in, week out and let others get carried away - we've seen it happen so many times before and that is not something we do at this club. We'll get our heads down and work hard at training and see where it takes us. If we are in a good position at Christmas then you can sit down and have a look at it but we know football can bite you.

“Hopefully we can stay injury-free but it's clear we have a competitive squad. The expectations and the targets within the changing room are always there because we have high standards.”

Lowestoft were more than a match for John Ward's League One side with Lee McGlone going close inside the opening minutes.

Master predator Danny Bloomfield also tested Colchester keeper Mark Cousins with an angled strike after the break while Blues' excellent centre-back Curtis Haynes-Brown nullified powerful striker Kayode Odejeyi alongside Greg Crane.

“I thought we did very well, particularly in the first half, and we were happy with the performance at half-time,” said Gallagher.

“I felt we just ran out of steam towards the end of the half and we were chasing the ball, which good sides make you do, but we put that right and considering the changes we made some great chances after the break as well.

“To keep a clean sheet against a quality side - we are chuffed to bits and we have done fantastic.”
