A neighbour, who asked not to be named and whose flat has been affected by the fire, said: "My friend rung me and said you better get out because there is a fire.
"I went and knocked on my neighbour's door and as we looked out the window there was a massive flame coming out from the flat and it has just spread from there.
"It was very scary.
"We have been told we cannot go back in for another 48 hours.
"We don't know what damage has been done but the firefighters are going to be hear for a while.
"We have got cats inside but we don't know whether or not if they will be alive and I need to get my medication.
"We would like to thank the emergency services and authorities. They have been fantastic.
"The council came out straight away and offered us accommodation as we have been told we won't be able to go back for a couple of days, but we are lucky we have friends to go to."
Speaking from the scene station manager Mel Buck said: "We were called to a flat fire in the high street in Lowestoft.
"On arrival, crews found a fully developed flat fire.
"We had people trying to self-rescue from one of the windows from the front, so two people were rescued by the fire service and taken to hospital.
"At the height of the fire we had five appliances, an aerial ladder platform, a command support vehicle, and an operational support unit.
"The fire is now contained but will we have people at the scene all night dampening down.
" A full fire investigation will be taking place tomorrow."
